My Son Drank Bath Water and Other Bath Toys

Bath ToysI have a wet sock.

I have a wet sock and my son probably has a stomach ache. All because of a plastic coco pops mug. I wouldn’t mind so much but I had just put those socks on and now I have to put a fifth sock on. Bath time is pretty typical in our house, following the usual pattern. I clean him, he cries and hugs me (so my t-shirt it wet too). He calms down, sits down, splashes for a bit, chews on the ducks and tries to drink the water, He also plays with some toys and then shouts at his willy for ten minutes.

Snappy doesn’t have a lot of bath toys, but then, much like the toys listed in this other post, they don’t really count as toys. Except one.

So this is a rundown of the bath toys my son currently plays with,

A Wooden Spoon.

This is a new entry to the bathtime toys list. He loves the wooden spoons anyway and when we went up for his bath he wouldn’t let go of it. Even when I stripped him, I had to pull the sleeves over the spoon. He used it to splash the water and make noise with. And very successfully so.

Empty Shampoo Bottles*

Bath ToysHe currently has as part of his bath toys; an empty bottle of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, an empty bottle of Beaming Baby shampoo, an empty bottle of Johnson’s Bedtime Bubble Bath and a bottle of VO5 Smoothly Does It Shampoo. I don’t know why he finds them so amusing, especially as he’s only learnt the fun game of throw things out the bath for podge mummy to pick up in the last few weeks. That V05 bottle has been there for ages. I use the other bottles to squirt him with water. Which he finds hilarious until I use the fact that he’s wet not to wash him (n.b he mostly stands up in the bath).

A Single Rubber Duck

I’ve highlighted this as a single rubber duck because I own about thirty rubber ducks. They’re dotted around the place, a collection I started when I moved back to Wales. Some were presents, two are actually the first present my wife ever bought me (including some chocolate that says ‘I love bread’ in German though I didn’t know it at the time). There are some ducks from our wedding and some ducks I’ve bought myself, and even a couple of Bud Ducks. However, the only duck currently in the bath is the alien duck we bought from the duck race one year. It doesn’t squirt water very well but Snappy does like to chew on it.

The CoCo Pops Mug.

Bath ToysThe plastic mug we got free (even though we didn’t buy any cereal) wasn’t always a toy. In fact, it wasn’t even upstairs but an in circulation cup for the various children that parade around my home. It got upstairs and so I used it to wash Snappy’s blonde hair (two brunette mums and a black haired donor…of course he’s blonde). He uses it to drink the bath water and pour water onto the floor (and my feet). And it’s also another thing to throw out the bath for podge to pick up. We’re trying to get him off that game.

So there you have it. Check out what other toys he plays with here and let me know what weird and wonderful ‘toys’ your kids play with in the comments.

*Disclaimer, my wife has thrown out all but the V05 bottle. Not sure why she’s left that one but the rest are in the bin.

** Amendment 15/11/17 – Bethend threw the bottles out because she was fed up of kicking them off the side of the bath but knew Snappy liked to play with the V05 bottle.

  1. I’m sure Small Boy is going to get ill from bath time soon. He loves this cheap plastic cup we use for washing his hair -only he prefers to fill it up with bath water and drink from it – that or the sponge. Yuk!

  2. He’s so adorbs! I remember when my nephew is same age, he would play with non-toys stuff instead of his toys. I am not sure why.. but as long as they’re happy =)

  3. So sweet. We have a bath water drinker in this house too, He also loves playing with empty bath product bottles, but his favourite bath toy is a little plastic jug (which he often drinks from!), he could spend hours pouring, and refilling, pouring and refilling… 😀

  4. I ALWAYS have wet socks after giving mine a bath. I’ve learnt to take my jumper & my socks off and leave them outside the door. Haha. But yes I totally agree, my little ones love all the bath toys that arent toys. At the moment they partciculary like my loofah, a broken travel cup & hairbrushes!

  5. Aw what a cutie, sounds just like my twin boys who are 17months. Constantly drinking the water, I have had to ban anything that can hold water like their stacking cups etc. Monkeys!

  6. I was really amused when reading this. I just found the shampoo bottle thing really funny. Looks like he is having fun in the bath

  7. Aw, he’s so cute! I love that he has so much fun with simple things that aren’t necessarily toys too! When I was a kid, I played with my pencils as if they were dolls – It sounds crazy, but I had way more fun with them, than I ever did with a box of barbies! xxx

  8. I’ve given up telling the child not to drink the bath water and that it is yucky, after four years I know to admit I’m beat. He’s not been sick yet, so there’s something #bloggerclubuk

  9. My daughter was ob-SESSED with a plastic red ball which she grasped in her tiny little hand for the better part of a year and a half, starting at about age 2. In case you were wondering, there was no cute character on the ball. It was not soft or squishy. It was a small, hard red ball and it went EVERYWHERE with her. I once had to rescue Ball from the depths of a pile of boulders and bloodied up my arm. (I even wrote a blog post about Red Ball!). She is 5 and still speaks of Red Ball wistfully.

Kids can be so weird at times!

  10. Your son is lovely:) My boys have had a few things over the years and they are all recycled bits and bobs from around the house. My youngest loves an old measuring jug that he will just pour and pour over his head which he seems to find soothing.
Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next time

  11. Guaranteed that even at the ages of 4 and 6, my girls still prefer to play with the empty bottles and cups! #KCACOLS
