Pride Month On QLF

June is Pride month. It’s sunny, it’s gay, we go full tilt on the queer. And seeing as this is Queer Little Family we’re also going all-in on this Pride month. We’re going to be mostly focusing on Queer topics for the rest of the month, with guest posts and getting a new resource page up, and of course, June 4th is LGBTQ Families Day.

June Is Pride Month

June has become Pride month over the years as a way to commemorate the Stonewall riots which occurred at the end of June in 1969. Many pride events are held during this time for the same reason though of course there are Pride events all year round. I’m hoping to attend Cardiff Pride in August but we’ll see how things go.

The Stonewall riots give name to one of the largest LGBTQ charities in the UK, and are a defining moment in LGBTQ history. They were a series of violent demonstrations and protests in New York, against a police raid that targeted members of the LGBTQ community at one of the few gay bars that existed. This is a very simplified version of what happened, there is a long and complicated history of the entire riots.

The most important point that the riots were a defining point for the LGBTQ movement, leading the gay liberation movement which was partly about fighting homophobia with pride.

QLF and Pride

So to celebrate Pride month, QLF will be focusing on Queer topics or queer bloggers for the entire month of June. This will include everything from LGBTQ media, history and art. Funny and serious. We’re also taking part in the LGBTQ Families Day. this event is run by Mobian and sponsored by the Family Equality Council. Blogging, tweeting, sharing and more are welcome on June 4th all over the web. You can check out the site for more information, join the Thunderclap and get involved on the day by following the hashtag #lgbtqfamiliesday online.

I’m also throwing the door open to other LGBTQ bloggers. This blog is all pride all year round, and we do take guest posts from time to time but this month it’s going to be LGBTQ bloggers only. They won’t be all writing about LGBT topics but whatever they want. If you’re an LGBTQ blogger, writer, artist, poet, a person with something to say – let me know. Get in touch with your idea and be part of Pride month on LGBTQ.

Supporting Pride and LGBTQ Community

If you’re cis-het be an ally and educate yourself and if you’re a member of the LGBTQ community support every member of the community.

I’m going to go into this in more detail but those are always going to be my main points. Supporting your LGBTQ loved ones, accepting their sexualities and genders without question, respecting them and their pronouns, names and labels is the most important thing you can ever do. And do it from the very beginning before they even realise they’re LGBTQ. Be open and honest and supportive at home with your kids so they don’t have to stress or worry or fear coming out.

I’m lucky. I grew up in a very inclusive family and never really worried about coming out to my mum. Also, I have a very ‘don’t give a fuck’ attitude. If people don’t like the fact that I’m an afab nonbinary/genderfluid bisexual* they can go whistle. This is what I want to everyone else too and that is everyone’s responsibility; cis, het and LGBTQ.

Supporting Queer Little Family

I’ve spoken about this before but there ways you can support QLF. We don’t work with brands, do sponsored or paid posts, or anything like that. The blog is completely self-funded done because I love writing, blogging and my family. So if you want to support QLF there are a couple of things you can do.

Buy us a coffee! We have a ko-fi page you can donate too. Click the button below to check it out and donate to QLF.

We also have a Zazzle store, with all sorts of stuff. I’ve been branching out into LGBTQ badges, but there is something for everyone – prints, postcards and more. Check out a few of the items below.

*I will be doing a LGBTQ terms 101/lexicon at some point this month.

  1. so inspiring and nice to make a feature for the blog during June. This resonates with me too – “accepting their sexualities and genders without question” – I’m in my late 30s and I really believed a lot of my generation were accepting. Recently i found this wasn’t the case – amongst people I’d known for years. so sad and such a step back into the dark ages – imo. Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next time!

  2. Well I never knew the Stonewall riots were the catalyst to Pride month. Brilliant idea of yours to showcase LGBTQ posts too. #kcacols

  3. Good to see a focus for Pride month. It’s good to spread the word. My friend who’s a doctor that talks at schools says with each visit, there are more and more transgender (inc non binary) students and it’s the fastest growing medical journal topic, which is great for those kids to be able to come out (in Sydney being LBG is pretty accepted – at least I think so, or it is near us, so maybe I’m deluded in my little bubble). The world is changing, and hopefully so if the attitudes of the people in it. #KCACOLS
