So We’re (Probably) Having A…

This morning was the twenty-week scan. As usual, it went as smoothly as everything does with us, in that we got to the hospital with fifteen minutes to spare for our ten am appointment only to find our appointment was at twenty past nine. So only twenty minutes late. We didn’t even get into Aberystwyth until twenty past nine! Anyway, the folks at the ultrasound were really nice and managed to fit us in any way seeing as the man who had a ten o’clock appointment didn’t show.

Phew.

I was willing to wait all day, cause I take the entire day off work to attend these appointments, I would’ve sat in that corridor all day if I had too. I didn’t want to go home without seeing my baby again, and hopefully finding out its sex. Especially as I’ve been counting down the days since the last scan we had.

Especially as we’ve been telling everyone we’re having the scan and hopefully finding out it’s sex.

This scan was much more detailed than the first one. Snappy is just a vague baby shape and measured in the first scan, but this scan really looked at all the organs, measured it’s head, brain, legs, arms, spine. Checked it’s heart was beating and the blood flow through it and the kidneys. You could see each individual chamber of its heart. I’ve never seen that on anyone before, let alone something small enough to fit inside my wife’s growing podge and isn’t even able to see what we’re looking at itself.

And toes! Tiny little baby toes! As clear as anything.

Everything was fine on the scan, all the measurements were fine and we got three pictures this time though we only asked for two (thanks folks!) and chose one to send to the in-laws. That means bethend and I can both take one to work tomorrow to show everyone.

So We’re Having A…

We got to the end of the scan and asked what the sex of the baby was because she hadn’t mentioned it and she had a look and….

And well, watch the video below for the results.

So yeah, we’re having a boy. Of course, it’s not certain – at twenty weeks it’s not 100% obvious and we’ll be choosing names for both sexes. Or maybe gender neutral names. We’re not sure. And this is not it’s gender. Sex and gender are not the same.

Anyway, we spoke to the consultant, bethend is just over the BMI for midwife-led care and gets extra scans and a test for gestational diabetes. We have an appointment on my birthday, and then another scan on at the end of May. All the other blood tests were fine too, our risk of Downs Syndrome is like 1 in 30,000 and she’s negative for most things, and positive for Parvovirus B19 (called Slapped Cheek here) antibodies.

Apparently, she is the only pregnant woman in five that work at her nursery to have checked this out. So they’re a little short staffed right now…

Bethend was worried that the baby wouldn’t be there (even though she feels it moving every day) or that something would be horribly wrong. I will admit I shared those fears too but whatever happens, I know we can deal with it.

Which includes having a boy, which doesn’t really change anything, because I will dress it in everything I currently own pretty much. Including the giant pink snowsuit we were given cause it gets cold and that think looks cosy as hell.

It’s either that or wrap the baby in cats.

Anyway, I hope you liked the video, it stars my niece Poppy, our neighbour Lily, her two cousins and of course our Rooster Feathas, who is fine after nearly having a box fall on him.

  1. Congratulations! The 20 week scan was my favourite as it’s so exciting to see the typical ultrasound picture of your own baby, not one in a book or on facebook but the one in your tummy! Hope everything else goes well for you. #bloggerclubuk

    1. I love the ultra sounds too, it’s wonderful seeing the bump but seeing it on screen alive and well is something else.

  2. What a lovely video. Congratulations! I loved that scan, seeing the bones on the spine was crazy cool. I actually had a few scans really late in the pregnancy to check some things and it was amazing the detail you can see! #BloggerClubUK

    1. Cool, I am looking forward to the later scans to see even more detail. Seeing the feet and hands was stunning.

  3. Ah, congratulations! I loved the video-what a creative and fun way to do a reveal! The scans are so cool, it truly is amazing how fast they grow 😀 #brillblogposts

  4. Loved the reveal video!!!! The 20 week scan was so amazing for us, we could hardly believe that was our baby. It sonds strange as you feel it kicking inside but something about actually seeing your baby is amazing!

  5. aww very exciting! bet you cant wait. I loved picking names all ready for our little man. although we didn’t find out until the day so we had a few for both 🙂 x #picknmix

    1. We’re picking names for both too, just in case it’s ends up being a girl, I mean it’s never certain.

  6. Aww very exciting and I love the video! They are usually quite good at getting the sex right at the 20 week scan but I do know a couple of people who were told one sex and ended up with another! I had scans every week with mine due to being high risk and I used to make them check every time! #justanotherlinky

  7. Aw, big congratulations! The video is funny! The scans are so amazingly clear nowadays. My #1 was confirmed as a boy at 16 weeks! #KCACOLS

  8. Congratulations! Gender-neutral names are the way to go – our daughter has what is technically a Welsh girls’ name, but ends in “yn” so is also masculine. Big gender-neutral name fans in this household! Glad to see everything is healthy, enjoy shopping (Little Bird at Mothercare is great for colourful non-gendered clothes). #KCACOLS

    1. We considered Welsh names. At the very beginning it was all Welsh names, but there aren’t actually a lot of male welsh names I like – but some gender neutral ones perhaps.

  9. That chicken though! 😀 Congratulations. I asked at every single scan to check the sex after 20 weeks and kept being told she was a girl, I “knew” she was a girl and that was the first question I should at the surgeons after my c-section…she’s a girl haha! But they can never be 100% sure! I would have to find out with all babies just because I feel like I need to be prepared and as we’ve moved and my daughter is now nearly six (can’t believe I’ve written that!) we don’t have any baby stuff. Everything will have to be new! #kcacols

    1. Awesome. I will only be 100% sure when I see it too. Also, my own mother still struggles with the face that I’m in my thirties…

  10. So exciting! I was so amazed by the scans when I was pregnant – I mean, I’d seen print outs, but actually seeing the baby moving on the screen was so different.

Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday x

  11. Congratulations – glad all was well at the scan! I think pink snowsuit or cats are both excellent babywear choices, personally. Love the sweet video, & I think the children looked suitably surprised to discover that the baby is…a chicken! 😉 Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday.

  12. Congrats! And, bravo for not letting yourselves be completely convinced by the sonogram. I was supposed to be a boy, and my baby pictures rocking all blue all the time are there as proof! #KCACOLS

  13. OH huge huge congratulations. Lovely little video too. Having one of each is lovely. Look forward to reading all about him or her if they got it wrong hahaha it happens. So lovely to look forward to though knowing doesn’t it? Love gender neutral names! Thanks for linking up to Share With Me. #sharewithme

  14. Congratulations 🙂 I love the 20 week scan, it’s crazy seeing how perfectly formed they are already and pretty cool to know if its a boy or a girl 🙂 Thanks for linking up to #PickNMix and making me broody eek!

    Stevie 🙂

  15. Congratulations 🙂 brilliant news the 20 week scan is the best by far. We are also having a boy and they are less likely to get a boy wrong for obvious reasons!! Glad everything is going well for you both look forward to hearing more updates soon. Thank you for joining us at #BloggerClubUK
