Okay, so in the UK we have Harvest celebrations earlier in the year; in fact, we had our church thanksgiving brunch this beginning of this month. I had a migraine though so I couldn’t go. However, my wife is American and we celebrate Thanksgiving in style.
This year is Snappy’s second thanksgiving so I’ve decided to get him a board book to celebrate it. There are a few good ones to choose from so I’m sharing them with you.
First up is The First Thanksgiving: A Lift-The-Flap Book. I like the lift the flap books in the theory but I know that in reality the flaps get ripped off pretty quickly by tiny hands. This one is bright and colourful and I like the idea of the story – something my son won’t learn in school here.
Spot’s Thanksgiving is cute because it’s Spot – who doesn’t love Spot. Snappy doesn’t have any Spot books yet, which is definitely something I have to rectify. Perhaps if not this one, one of the board books in Welsh. Mae Spot yn Cymraeg yw Smot – Spot in Welsh is Smot.
Llama Llama Gives Thanks is a book about llamas! Apparently, there is a whole series of them – who knew. This is about a family of llamas celebrating Thanksgiving and I’m tempted to get it just cause of the llamas. The artwork is nice and well…llamas are awesome.
Thankful is beautiful and probably the book I am going to get my son because it’s exactly what Thanksgiving is about. Whatever the origin of the holiday, it’s about being thankful for everything the world has to offer and something I want to teach my son. The art is beautiful and it’s about being thankful rather than the actual holiday itself so good all year round.
Last is Turkey Time! A delicious board book. We’re big on food here at QLF, though Snappy is mostly all about breakfast over dinner so this might be wasted on him. But it’s colourful and might encourage him to eat his dinner. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
So, those are the Thanksgiving Board Books – there are more of course – but there are the best ones in my opinion and I’m definitely geting Thankful. What about you? If you have any suggestions let me know, or tell me which you would choose.

These books all sound great, there is nothing nicer than reading with little ones and seeing them enjoy the story x
My son likes to read to us. He’ll let us read to him but mostly it’s the other way around.
I love reading to my son. When he lets me that is!
awww I love spot books!! #kcacols
I know. You can’t go wrong with a Spot book.
What some lovely sounding books, I love that Spot is still around and loved, I adored Spot as a child.
I was happy to find Spot was still going too.
Aw I had no idea that your wife was American but that is so nice that you celebrate Thanksgiving in style! I love the idea of the Thanksgiving board books too.
We love Thanksgiving. Her family is huge and gets together every year. This is us being part of that really.
I’d have loved to read these as a child. Its so great to find books that encourage you to be thankful xxx
Exactly. My plan is to get books like these for every stage of my son’s reading life.
Teach children the importance of being thankful and showing gratitude is so important! I love how each of these books teaches kids just that with a little history lesson!
Yeah. Knowing about the history is important because how can you celebrate it else?
Is there is a “The Dinosaur that Pooped Christmas” Thanksgiving edition?
You Brits do come up with some awesome kids books!
I don’t know but I need to know! Lol. If there isn’t there should be.
These all look great. The Spot one looks very good as Spot stories are always good
You can always rely on the Spot books to be good.!
Ahh what lovely books! I love the look of the Thankful book, I think we all need to be a little more thankful.
I wanted to get him a book he can read all year round really. Being thankful should be a way of life.
I always think Thanksgiving is such a lovely holiday, it would be so nice if we celebrated it in the UK.
I think if people find meaning in it they should go for it. It’s aalways good to have a reason to get family together.
What a lovely selection of books. I like that you celebrate thanksgiving over here. My brother in laws family did the same as his wife is American.
We love Thanksgiving. My whole family gets involved.
Some lovely sounding books, it’s nice to have books explaining where the holidays come from x
Especially ones from other countries.
These books sound lovely and they do have a lesson in each of them, which is great. Children learn a lot from stories so it’s important to chose the right books for them.
Exactly. I think at this age it’s important they get into books and develop a life long love.
These all sound like brilliant thanksgiving books. Its great to know about different holidays
A great selection of books for the children here. Much better than being on computer games x
This books would be lovely when my LO is older to learn about different holidays. Whilst it’s an American Holiday I think it’s a good idea to teach children about being thankful for things. I love spot the dog! x
I remember Spot from when I was young! The llama story looks fun though 🙂
I used to love reading Spot when I was younger – what a flashback!!
I love the American version of Thanksgiving. What a great selection of books.
What a great selection of books for the little ones! I remember Spot the dog from when I was little!
Ah wow, who knew! I don’t know why but I had just never contemplated that there would be books specifically for Thanksgiving but these are fab. Although in my local library here are books for going to the dentist, first day at school, someone dying. I suppose there is a book for everything.
Happy thanksgiving to you and the missus and thanks fo thinking up to #KCACOLS
What a great selection of Thanksgiving books – I love that you can get boards for different occasions to help children learn about life around them and their heritage
I need to find some americans friends so I have an excuse to celebrate thanksgiving in style 😉
There are quite a few Americans living in or around the Aberystwyth area.
What a lovely selection of appropriate books for Thanks Giving. I think my son would love them too he loves listening to mummy read.
Lovely books I’m always looking for new ones to read with the kids. I’m looking for flap books atm xx
Thanksgiving is brilliant – I was in America one year when it happened (with my brothers family) it was such an eye opener. x
WE love board books and they are always so durable. Our favourite is Thankful and it has a lovely sentiment x
Shame you couldn’t attend due to a migraine 🙁 Hope you’re feeling better now. Love that these books instill good values of gratitude to kids. Happy thanksgiving!
I’m American and one of the traditions that I have brought over with me is Thanksgiving. It’s my favourite holiday and I love being able to share it with my step-kids! They love it, so these books are so cute. Even though they are probably too old for them I know they’ll like them. x
The first three books I had for my youngest when he was a toddler. Great books! Happy Thanksgiving!
sorry, coming from #anythinggoes
We love the Llama Llama series! All good choices. xoxo Happy Holidays! #kcacols
I’ll send this to my friend. She might find this useful 🙂
I love Spot books, so it would have to be Spot’s Thanksgiving for me.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a children’s book about Thanksgiving before, lovely selection! #kcacols
